The Mind of God

Pastor Julius Adegbite · Built from sermon recordings · Hardback and ebook

The situation

Years of preaching, none of it written down. The material for a book existed and had existed for a long time, in the form it had always taken: spoken, recorded, scattered, never assembled. This is the single most common situation in ministry publishing and almost nobody resolves it, because the gap is not motivation. It is that writing and preaching are different skills.

Julius was also sceptical about whether self-publishing could produce something he would be willing to hand to a peer. That scepticism is well founded. A pastor’s book circulates among other pastors, and if it looks amateur it costs the author standing rather than building it.

What we did

Transchribe. We transcribed the recordings, found the argument running through years of teaching, interviewed to fill what the archive did not cover, and turned spoken language into written language without losing his voice. The test at every stage was whether someone who had heard him preach would recognise the person on the page.

Then we treated the physical object as the deliverable. Hardback setup through IngramSpark alongside print and ebook, interior typesetting to trade specification, and a cover benchmarked against traditionally published titles in the category rather than against other self-published books.

Files were checked against printer specification before upload: spine width against actual page count, bleed, colour profile, resolution. Unglamorous, and exactly what separates a book that looks published from one that looks produced.

What happened

Five hundred copies in the first run.

That number is worth holding still for a moment. The median self-published title sells fewer than a hundred copies across its entire life. Julius committed to five times that before the book had proved anything, because he knew exactly who it was for and they were already listening to him.

Then the outcome the book was really for. A pastor from another church encountered it, assumed it had come from a publishing house, and asked who published it. For an author whose audience is other ministry leaders, that single question is worth more than a hundred anonymous downloads. It is a referral, generated by the object itself, with no marketing behind it at all.

Someone who would probably never have sat down to write a manuscript now has a hardback in circulation and peers asking where it came from.

Would a book do this for you?

Twenty minutes on a call and you will know. We ask what your expertise currently earns you and where it stalls, then tell you honestly whether a book would move it. If it would not, we say so.
