How much does it cost to publish a book in the UK?

Where the money goes

Every published book goes through the same stages. Here is what each one typically costs in the UK, so you can see where it is worth investing and where you can save.

1. Editing

Editing is the biggest cost and the biggest difference between a book that looks self-made and one that looks professionally published. There are three levels, and not every book needs all three:

• Developmental or structural editing looks at the whole book: argument, structure, pacing and what is missing. For a full-length manuscript this commonly runs into the low thousands of pounds.
• Copyediting works line by line on clarity, consistency and accuracy. For an 80,000-word book, expect roughly £800 to £1,600 at typical UK rates.
• Proofreading is the final check for errors before print, usually a few hundred pounds.

The best way to control editing costs is to find out which level your manuscript genuinely needs before you pay for any of it. That is why every Schribe project starts with a structural assessment.

2. Cover design

Readers judge books by their covers, and so do bookshops. A bespoke cover from an experienced designer typically costs a few hundred pounds; premade covers are cheaper but less distinctive. A cover also needs a spine and back cover sized to your final page count for print.

3. Interior formatting

Typesetting turns a manuscript into print-ready pages and a clean ebook file. Simple text layouts cost less than books with images, tables or complex layouts.

4. ISBNs

In the UK, ISBNs are sold by Nielsen. At 2026 prices a single ISBN costs £93, a block of ten £174 and a block of one hundred £387, including VAT. Each format needs its own ISBN, so a paperback, hardback and ebook need three. See our guide to who owns the ISBN before you buy.

5. Printing

Print on demand means there is no upfront printing cost: each copy is printed when it is ordered and the cost comes out of the sale. As a rough guide, Amazon KDP prints a standard black-and-white UK paperback for about 85p plus around a penny per page. If you want boxes of copies for a launch, event or church bookstall, a short print run is quoted separately.

6. Distribution

7. Marketing

Marketing is optional but it is where many books are won or lost. Costs range from nothing (your own network and social media) to several thousand pounds for a managed campaign.

5. Get the cover right once. A cheap cover that has to be replaced costs more in the end.
